Burning Hands
: This is the benchmark for 1st-level area attack spells. It is even better than sleep because it can affect up to six squares (sleep only affects 4 Hit Dice, which means up to 4 creatures) and affects mindless creatures and undead.
Magic Missile
: Perhaps the best 1st-level spell in the game,
magic missile
may not do a lot of damage, but it requires no attack roll, has a medium range, needs no saving throw, and harms incorporeal creatures. Even if
magic missile
were 2nd-level, smart casters would still learn it.
